The Health Office has two registered nurses. The majority of the day is spent with the students assessing and evaluating minor illnesses and injuries. Unfortunately, a lot of time can be spent trying to locate a parent. The Health Room Emergency cards are for all parents to complete and needed to be updated as phone numbers change or places of employment change. We have a school dismissal procedure. The emergency contacts listed on the card are used for true emergencies only. If you are difficult to reach during the school day other dismissal arrangements can be made. A student is not released from school without parental contact and the person who would be picking up the student if not the parent. Students cannot make their own dismissal arrangements from their cell phones, classroom phones, etc. and leave school grounds. Students are required to have a timed pass from their teacher to go to the Health Office. Health counseling is available. Students with health needs have a health care plan and an accommodation plan if needed. Annually, there will be a space on the Health Room Emergency card inquiring if the student has health insurance. This is to provide Mandated Physicals Connecticut law requires a health assessment / physical exam in prior to entering grade 7 and during grade10. The CIAC physical exam form is needed to participate in interscholastic sports. This pre-participation sports physical allows athletic eligibility for one year. When Parents Are Away There are times that parents may need to spend time away from home and leave the student in the care of others. Please put in writing the length of time away and who will be responsible to make health decisions in your absence. Medications Students cannot carry any medication to school. The exception to this law would be a metered dose inhaler or an EpiPen with physician authorization. This includes Tylenol, Advil, Tums, etc. CT state law requires written authorization from your medical provider, co-signed by the parent and be on file in the Health Office. This authorization is good for one year. The Health Office will provide for Tylenol and Advil only. Other medications need to be provided by the parent. Students may bring their own cough drops or throat lozenges to school. Medication kept in the Health Office cannot be stored over the summer and needs to be picked up within a few days after the last day of school. |

| Vision A vision screening is done in grade 9 unless the student is already under care of an eye care professional. Vision screening is also done if requested by teacher or parent. |
| Scoliosis Scoliosis screening is offered for grades 7, 8, and 9 if the student has not had a recent physical. |
| Health Office Dismissal In the event that a student becomes ill during the school day and needs to leave school, a parent or guardian needs to be notified. For this reason it is important that the Health Office Emergency Card has current locating phone or cell numbers where a parent can be reached. The parent or guardian can designate who will pick up the student if they cannot. The emergency contacts are only used in a true emergency. If the parent or guardian is difficult to reach during the day and an alternate dismissal plan needs to be made, please call the Health Office and submit this request in writing. |
