Health Office

The nurses assess and evaluate illness and injuries that occur during the school day for students, faculty, and staff. The Health Office is not an infirmary or a clinic. The nurses do not diagnose nor do diagnostic testing.

NWR7 follows the CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommendations to prevent disease transmission. Students should not be sent to school when physically ill. Students need to remain home for 24 hrs after a fever or symptoms subside.

State mandated physicals are required during grade 10. Failure to submit this form may exclude students from entering grade 11 until compliance is met. A physical submitted during grade 9 on the state form meets this requirement. Out of state transfer students must comply with Connecticut requirements regarding physical assessments and immunizations to enroll.

CIAC (Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference) physicals are required to participate in interscholastic sports. These physicals provide eligibility to participate for 13 months from date of exam.

Students cannot dismiss themselves from school. An ill or injured student must report to the health office where an assessment and/or treatment is made and attempts to reach a parent is made. It is important that the locating numbers listed on the student’s emergency card be current. A student is not dismissed without parental contact. The parent determines what arrangements for dismissal is made. Emergency contacts are only used in a true emergency. In a situation where parent/guardian may be difficult to reach during the day, an alternative dismissal plan can be arranged with the school nurse.

There are situations when a parent/guardian may leave a student in the care of others. It is necessary to submit in writing who is the responsible adult designated to make medical/dismissal decisions for the student for a given length of time.

No medications are given in school without written authorization from a medical professional and parent/guardian. State law states that students cannot carry medication to school. This includes over the counter medications. With proper authorization, students may self carry and administer emergency medication such as metered dose inhalers, EpiPens, and insulin. Students may bring their own cough drops and throat lozenges to school. Medication cannot be stored over the summer vacation. Arrangements must be made to pick up medication at the end of the year.

All health forms/ information should be mailed or brought directly to the health office. Forms can be misplaced, lost, or forgotten when sent to school with the student. The health office has limited hours during summer vacation.

All forms can be obtained from this site.

Vision screening is in the fall for students in grade 9.

Scoliosis screening is in the spring for students in grades 7, 8, and 9 who do not have a current physical on file.

Student Accident Insurance

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE PLAN

You are under no obligation to purchase these plans. Your own health care plan may provide adequate coverage. In making your decision realize that Regional School District #7 does not carry accident coverage for students except for when they are participating in athletics. In case of a student accident the cost of medical care is the parent’s responsibility.
