A major aim of the English Department is to help students construct meaning, make sense of the world, and become thoughtful and effective users of language for communication and lifelong learning. To accomplish these objectives, the language arts curriculum develops reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing skills so that students can communicate effectively to various audiences in various modes for different purposes. Over time students' language skills become refined, and as learning language and using language to learn are inseparable, thinking, learning and communicating occur in a natural, integrated way. A key mission of the language arts program is the development of independent and interdependent learners.

Program Goals

The language arts curriculum establishes a framework for enabling students to accomplish the following:

Choose and apply appropriate strategies that facilitate the development of fluent and proficient use of the language arts.
