PE/Health The health education program strives to recognize and reflect the needs of today's society and provide the opportunity and resources to help meet these needs. The program is articulated through a comprehensive curriculum in grade 9 & 10 and specific topics courses in grades 11 & 12. |
| Grade 9 Health |
| Grade 9 health will continue to build upon the skills gained in eighth grade including decision making, diversity issues, communication and conflict resolution. Additional areas to be included will be substance use - tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, steroids, and other illegal drugs; prevention of disease - HIV/AIDS, risk behaviors; nutrition - eating disorders, diet; and growth and development-dating & intimacy issues, responsibilities, physical changes. |
| Grade 10 Health |
| Grade 10 health will continue with important foundations. Topics to be included are disease prevention - sexually transmitted disease, chronic disease; substance use - social implications, issues, risk factors; mental & emotional health - depression, suicide, support systems & coping skills, sexual harassment. |
| Grade 11 Health |
| Grade 11 health involves CPR, First Aid and safety training. Students will be given instruction in CPR and first aid training. They will have the option to take the tests for Red Cross certification. Personal safety issues will also be discussed including date rape, sexual abuse, safe homes & work places. |
| Grade 12 Health |
Students will explore health topics that will be relevant as they get ready to graduate. Topics will include health insurance choices, holistic health, reliable health information sources including the Internet, parenting, health issues/risks affecting students ages 18-24, and current information from research. |
