Regional School District No. 7 is composed of four rural-suburban towns: Barkhamsted, Colebrook, New Hartford and Norfolk. The district, consisting of 157 square miles, is located twenty miles west of Hartford and has a population of approximately 12,700.

Northwestern Regional High School is a comprehensive public school which operated under a house plan. Opened in September, 1958, the school is accredited by the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. The school campus of 42 acres includes two 9-12 Houses. Enrollment in grades 9-12 is currently 749. Ninety five percent of the professional staff have a masters degree or equivalent.The average class size in the academic program is 20. Students in grade ten in Connecticut public schools participate in a mastery test (Connecticut Academic Performance Test)developed by the State Department of Education.

The school curriculum is both flexible and encompassing, offering numerous one-semester, as well as full-year courses at intriductory through advanced levels. The school operates on a fully rotating schedule which includes a 67 minute period for each class once every seven days, with the remaining periods being 43 minutes in duration. Classes meet five times weekly for thirty-six weeks per one credit course: 1/2 credit is given for a one-semester subject and a 1/4 credit for each year of physical education/health. Marking periods are every 9 weeks. Laboratory work is required in the college preparatory sciences as well as in German, French, and Spanish. The school also has an Agricultural Education Program.

The staff at Northwestern Middle School is comprised of dedicated professionals, many with long tenure at the school. We are complimented by a high-quality student body that works hard to achieve in the classroom and are also known for their exceptional level of community service. We participate in programs that provide Turkey Baskets for families at Thanksgiving, Holiday Angels at Christmas, and support programs for our troops. Internet Safety Training


Internet Safety Training – On behalf of the US Attorney’s Office, District of Connecticut and the Department of Children and Families


Tweens and Teens spend many hours per day online chatting and interacting with friends and people who they may not know well and who may put them at risk. To educate parents, teachers and others, the US Attorney’s Office, District of Connecticut, in collaboration with the Department of Children and Families, are offering two FREE OF CHARGE online Internet Safety Trainings.  This training will introduce parents, teachers and others to internet and cell phone applications and video game systems being used by the tweens/teens that could potentially put them at risk. Trainings will take place on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, and Wednesday, November 8, 2023, from 6 – 7:30 p.m.  Registration is required and available via the attached one-page flyer: Internet Safety Training.pdf

  • Attention Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors: The free Springpath College Fair (in-person) will be held on Tuesday, September 26th from 4:30-7pm at the Farmington Gardens. Designed for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, the SpringPath College "Match” Fair will provide access to 100+ colleges, universities, and post-secondary programs from all over the country and abroad! Voluntary Student Insurance


HSR is our new carrier for Student Accident Insurance.  Part of the plan includes a voluntary plan for families.  HSR has an  Online Flyer for Voluntary Student Insurance Enrollment detailing the different plan options at  This flyer provides easy-to-understand instructions (in English & Spanish) and directions for enrolling online at The process is very simple. 9th Grade Orientation


We are looking forward to welcoming the Class of 2027 at our 9th Grade Orientation on Wednesday, August 23rd from 5:00-8:00 pm!  The orientation will include a guided tour of the high school, some small group activities, and an introduction to our high school administrators, Link Crew Advisors, and student leaders.  Please drop your child off at the gym entrance (back of the school) no earlier than 4:45 p.m.  


Our administrative team will also host a 9th grade parent meeting that evening from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

Per USDA and State requirements LUNCH meals will be returning to the tiered system of Paid and Free, students who qualify for free or reduced meals will receive free lunch, and ALL STUDENTS first Breakfast meals will be FREE.
