Northwestern Middle School Updates

11/10/2020

Northwestern Veterans Day Celebrations

This week we have been celebrating our Veterans each morning during our Homeroom. Our Student Council has planned and put together a special week long program that includes education about Veteran’s Day, interviews of veterans in our community, poetry and musical performances by our own Northwestern Middle School musicians.

Wednesday, November 11th: In-Person Day for Cohort A

Students in Cohort A will be attending school in-person tomorrow (Wednesday, November 11th), while students in Cohort B will join their classes virtually from home.  All students have received the schedule for Wednesday in their email.  Students will only need to bring necessary items to school on Wednesdays for our 8-period schedule, such as:

  • Chromebook and Charger

  • Earbuds

  • Calculator

  • Wear Sneakers (if you have PE)

  • Instrument (Can be dropped off in the Band room in the morning)

  • Reading Book

  • Pen/Pencil

  • Math Notebook and/or binder-this will be limited, please pay attention to your math teacher's requirement.

Our custodial staff will continue to thoroughly clean and disinfect the building before, during and after school, in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Early Release Days November 16 and 17

November 16 and 17 will be early release days for parent-teacher conferences. School will be dismissed at 12:05 on these days. A grab and go lunch will be available when students leave for dismissal. Students will order lunch in their homeroom.

Turkey Baskets

The students at Northwestern Regional High School and Middle School are currently conducting a Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Food Drive to aid families in need for the upcoming holidays.  Students are collecting canned goods and are raising money to purchase turkeys.  The families that will be assisted by our turkey drive are from New Hartford, Colebrook, Norfolk, and Barkhamsted, the four towns that make up our school district.  Many of these families have small children, and without assistance from our school, will go without a Thanksgiving dinner this year.  This activity is one that fosters civic responsibility and community involvement.  Students are encouraged to give back to the communities from which they come.  Any assistance you can provide will help those in need this Thanksgiving.

We will be doing things a little differently this year due to COVID.  We are holding a collection drive at Northwestern on November 15th and 22nd from 10:00 am-12:00 pm to limit building drop-offs.  If you cannot drop items off during that time, please contact us, and we will coordinate.

The following are the items that we would like to include in the Turkey Baskets.

Non-Perishable Items:

Canned Green Beans

Canned Corn

Canned Yams

Instant Mashed Potatoes

Canned Cranberry Sauce

Corn Muffin Mix

Stuffing Mix

Canned or Jar of Gravy

Jar of Applesauce

Canned Broth

Foil Roasting Pans

Coffee or Tea

Bottled Juice

*Money and grocery store gift cards can be donated to help purchase various items needed.

HOLIDAYS FOR HEROES

Northwestern High School will be holding its 3rd Annual Card Writing Drive on Wednesday November 11th , Thursday Nov. 12th and Friday Nov. 13th to honor local veterans and military families. The name of the program is Holidays for Heroes, and it is sponsored by the American Red Cross.  The chapter will distribute the cards to veteran homes, military facilities, and hospitals throughout the Connecticut region.  We have plenty of cards from last year due to your generosity.  The holiday cards will be available in Social Studies classes on those three days for students to write messages of thanks. Students can also stop by Mrs. McHugh's office to write a note for a veteran. In addition, veterans love handmade cards! If students would like to make a card,  they can be dropped off at the House II Office by November 13th. Please contact Trina McHugh (tmchugh@nwr7.org) for questions or further information.
