School Counseling Department News

  • Attention College-Bound Juniors: Starting to think about doing some virtual college tours?  College Board and the National Association of Colleges Admissions Counseling are both hosting separate opportunities to virtually see college campuses and interact with college admissions counselors.  The School Counseling Department created a website for you to be able to access all of this and more from home.  Here is the link: https://www.nwr7.com/high-school/hs-resources/school-counseling.  Once there, under "School Counseling" click on "School Counseling Resource Center" and it will bring you to the main school counseling resource webpage. Click on "Students and Families" and then "Class of 2022". Under the “College Tours” window you will see links for “NACAC Virtual College Tours” and “Big Future Days”.  Feel free to take a look and take advantage of the resources we have created for you there or within any section of the website!  Contact your school counselor with any questions.
  • Attention College-Bound Seniors - Do you still need help filling out your FAFSA? The University of Connecticut (UConn), Connecticut State Colleges & Universities (CSCU), the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges (CCIC), New Haven Promise, the Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators (CAPFAA), College Board and the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) have launched an initiative – #CTCollegeBound – to provide virtual sessions and individual appointments to help guide students and their families through the college application and financial aid process. The effort recognizes that current pandemic-related circumstances might make the process more complicated for families than in regular years. Information sessions have been scheduled so far to take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 26 to Feb. 7, and additional sessions might be added as needed. The sessions all will be held virtually, and students and their families will also be able to reserve one-on-one appointments with admissions and financial aid officers. Interested students and families can register here: http://bit.ly/ctcollegebound

If you have any additional questions, please contact our Director of School Counseling, Ms. Lori Foote, at lfoote@nwr7.org

E-Sports Club

We are pleased to announce our new E-Sports club.  The E-sports club will be a place for students of all gaming ability levels. Sponsored by the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) and PlayVs, an e-Sports gaming platform, students will have the opportunity to compete against other CT high schools in video games such as League of Legends, Rocket League, and SMITE. Established for high schools in 2018, e-Sports is one of the fastest growing extra-curricular activities in the state for both high schools and colleges. Not only will students build character through teamwork, but students will build on curricular components of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). In addition, students can gain exposure with college and universities through e-Sports as over 200 colleges and universities have given out millions of dollars in scholarship money for students to continue their education and e-Sports experience in college.

More information will be shared with students who are interested in this opportunity.  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Dan Carroll at dcarroll@nwr7.org

Christopher Fray

Good afternoon everyone,

As we prepare to transition to the Hybrid Learning Model on Monday, I wanted to share with you an updated calendar of Cohort Days for the remainder of Q2 and for Q3. Please note that the final day of Q2 will now be Friday, January 22nd. Laura will follow up with an email with the updated quarter and semester end dates.

As you know, we will not be administering mid-term exams so we will not run the four early release days. However, we will have two early release days to allow for professional development on Wednesday, January 20th and Thursday, January 21st. These dates will allow for one early release for Cohort A and one for Cohort B. We also have an early release day scheduled for Friday, February 12th for professional development. The Professional Development Committee will send out information about the plans which will focus on PDLP’s and opportunities for department specific work.

Thank you,

Gary
