COMMUNITY
Regional School District No. 7 is composed of four rural-suburban towns: Barkhamsted, Colebrook, New Hartford and Norfolk. The district, consisting of 157 square miles, is located twenty miles west of Hartford and has a population of approximately 12,700.
NORTHWESTERN HIGH SCHOOL
Northwestern Regional High School is a comprehensive public school which operated under a house plan. Opened in September, 1958, the school is accredited by the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. The school campus of 42 acres includes two 9-12 Houses. Enrollment in grades 9-12 is currently 749. Ninety five percent of the professional staff have a masters degree or equivalent.The average class size in the academic program is 20. Students in grade ten in Connecticut public schools participate in a mastery test (Connecticut Academic Performance Test)developed by the State Department of Education.
PROGRAM & OFFERINGS
The school curriculum is both flexible and encompassing, offering numerous one-semester, as well as full-year courses at intriductory through advanced levels. The school operates on a fully rotating schedule which includes a 67 minute period for each class once every seven days, with the remaining periods being 43 minutes in duration. Classes meet five times weekly for thirty-six weeks per one credit course: 1/2 credit is given for a one-semester subject and a 1/4 credit for each year of physical education/health. Marking periods are every 9 weeks. Laboratory work is required in the college preparatory sciences as well as in German, French, and Spanish. The school also has an Agricultural Education Program.
NORTHWESTERN MIDDLE SCHOOL
The staff at Northwestern Middle School is comprised of dedicated professionals, many with long tenure at the school. We are complimented by a high-quality student body that works hard to achieve in the classroom and are also known for their exceptional level of community service. We participate in programs that provide Turkey Baskets for families at Thanksgiving, Holiday Angels at Christmas, and support programs for our troops. Northwestern Middle School is dedicated to an outstanding academic and student activity program. Please stop in for one of our programs or call us with any questions you may have.

Veterans Day Breakfast and Assembly
We are looking forward to our annual Veterans Day breakfast and assembly on Monday, November 11th! Breakfast starts at 8:00 and the assembly will begin at approximately 9:00. Please RSVP with Gail Rogers at grogers@nwr7.org if a veteran family member would like to join a student for the festivities!
We are also preparing a slideshow to honor veterans in the Northwestern community. If you have a veteran in your family, please send photos to the Middle School Student Council at msstudentcouncil@ms.nwr7.org with the veteran’s name, rank, branch of service, and the student they are connected to here at Northwestern. They will be included in the slideshow which will be shown at our Veterans Day program. Thank you!

Scholarship Opportunities
A list of available scholarship applications can be found in the Scholarship Opportunites file and in Naviance. Be sure to check back often, as many scholarships will open their 2025 applications over the next few months. Students can also find many of these scholarship postings on the bulletin board outside of House 1. Contact Michelle Derochick at mderochick@nwr7.org with any scholarship questions.
Sophomore Classroom Lessons
Our school counselors visited the English II classes to give the first Career Exploration lesson of the year! Our sophomores logged into Naviance (our college and career readiness platform) and explored the different resources within the program, which included: Career Clusters research, building their resumes, and exploring Road Trip Nation. Much of what they did was in preparation for our bi-annual Career Day event which will be held in the spring.
Athletic Department News
High School Sports awards night is November 18th in the Auditorium at 6:00.
Please register your child for Winter Sports on FamilyID soon so they are cleared to play when tryouts start the first week of December. Both High School and Middle School registration are open. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Fred Williams at fwilliams@nwr7.org.

Please schedule your student's session as soon as possible if they have not had a session scheduled yet. Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is the AIM Program’s Kindness in Motion Project. Students, staff, and our school community have participated in the Shoebox Collection for the last 5 years. Once again, we are skiing everyone in our Northwestern family to consider making a donation. Suggested items include personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.), school supplies (pencils, books, etc.), small toys (stuffed animals, cars, etc.) and/or accessories such as socks, sunglasses, etc. NO SHARPS or LIQUIDS ARE ALLOWED. Many of the items can be purchased at your local dollar store. Please consider dropping off items into one of our Christmas Boxes throughout our school before November 15th.
